Embodying power – an evening of gentle movement, sensation and stillness
A WOW Women of the World Cambridge fringe event
Friday 4th March 2016
6.30pm to 8pm
Friend’s Meeting House, Jesus Lane, CB5 8BA
How do power structures affect the way we live in our bodies? We will imagine, move, reflect and rest, listening to the stories of our sensations. Movements will be simple and accessible, with the option to sit throughout.
“I encourage her to breathe fully into her entire body to strengthen herself and to make a space for herself which is free from the things which would squash her soul” – Jill Hayes
The body has been seen as akin to nature, a force to be subdued and restrained. Passions of the flesh have been feared as irrational drives leading the mind away from cool-headed reason. As a group we will explore and reclaim the lived sensations of the body. Dwelling in the “felt sense” we will draw closer to our full-bodied, creative potential.
6.30pm – Welcome and short talk
6.50pm – Standing movements to embody power – gentle movements based on tai chi and qigong
7.10pm – Guided rest (lying on mats) – using the sensations of the body as an anchor to the present moment
7.30pm – Discussion
8.00pm – Close
“The space where her feelings pulled her apart and what was inside her was revealed. And this lit her way” – Susan Griffin
– Experience comfort, trust and power in the body
– Reconnect with the feeling, sensing body whilst pausing the thinking, judging brain
– Meet like-minded others and share experiences
– Tools to take away – ways to embody power, ways to rest deeply
This workshop is part of the 2016 WOW Women of the World Festival.
